Arbor
Day Celebrations
Members of Pecan Grove Garden Club annually
plant at least one tree in honor of Arbor Day. Many are planted at local schools.
Arbor Day is celebrated in Arizona on the last Friday of April. Some areas of the State observe
a March date. Arbor Day is considered a holiday in some States but not in Arizona.

West Wetlands Pecan Grove – April 22, 2009
As part of their 2009 Arbor Day activities members of Pecan Grove Garden Club voted to donate $2000.00 to purchase
pecan trees for West Wetlands park. A small pecan grove had been established in the park in 2008. The club donation increased
the size of the Pecan Grove in our local park.
Students from Pecan Grove School participated in the ceremony by providing music and helping plant the trees. Several
Pecan Grove Garden Club members attended the planting event and Val Colvin spoke briefly about the pecan tree donation and
other club projects in the park. See photos below

Mesquite School Special Planting Day – April 22, 2008
It was a sad time in the Yuma area – vandals had destroyed all of the playground trees at Mesquite School.
But the entire community rallied around and a special public tree planting day was conducted to celebrate Arbor Day.
Pecan Grove Garden Club had the honor of replacing a special tree that had originally been planted to honor the death
of student Andrew Lujan.
A special ceremony including music and speakers proceeded the planting. Pecan Grove members donated the tree. Andrew’s
father joined members as the tree was planted and the identification stone returned to its place near the tree.
