CITY ON XERISCAPE LANDSCAPING PROJECT
Pecan Grove Garden Club and Yuma tennis enthusiasts
celebrated together, July 1, 2010 at the grand reopening ceremony of eight refurbished city tennis courts and surrounding
xeriscape landscaping.
Pecan Grove Garden
Club donated $2600 for desert plants in the new garden outside the perimeter. To enhance the plantings, the club hopes to
later install signage identifying desert plants and the club as a sponsor.
Becky Chavez, City Parks and Recreation director and City Administrator Greg Wilkinson opened the
ceremony with remarks that included special thanks to the Garden Club for its generous donation.
The courts had been
closed in mid-October 2006 due to deterioration of the playing surface that presented a potential safety hazard for players.
The refurbished courts feature low water use desert plants, trees, large boulders and aggregate that matches the color of
the tennis courts.
The Desert Sun Tennis courts are located adjacent to Friendship Park, Yuma Civic
Center and Desert Sun Stadium.Access from 34th Place west of Ave. A.
